About this snakes and ladders board generator

Every board is numbered the traditional way — square 1 at the bottom left, climbing to the highest number at the top, with each row alternating direction so the path zigzags back and forth across the board rather than always running left to right. A fresh set of snakes and ladders is placed randomly every time you generate a new board, so no two printouts are quite the same, while still following sensible rules: no square ever has more than one snake or ladder attached to it, the start and final squares are always left clear, and every jump covers a reasonable distance rather than a trivial one-square shuffle.

Difficulty controls both the board size and how the snakes and ladders are balanced. Easy uses a smaller 6×6 board with more ladders than snakes, so young players climb more than they slide back. Medium steps up to an 8×8 board with an even mix. Hard uses the classic 10×10 board with more snakes than ladders, for a longer, tougher game.

This works exactly like the game you already know, so it needs nothing beyond what you'd normally use to play: a die and a token per player. It also works well as a review-game shell — require a correct answer to a question before a player can roll, or before a ladder counts, and the same printed board becomes a review activity for any subject rather than just a game.

Nothing you configure here is uploaded anywhere; the board is generated entirely in your browser, and a new layout is only a click away if you want a different one.

Frequently asked questions

Is the board numbered the traditional way?

Yes. Square 1 starts at the bottom left, and numbers climb toward the top, with each row reversing direction — the same zigzag layout as a standard snakes and ladders board.

Will I get a different board each time?

Yes, every time you click "Generate new board," a fresh, valid arrangement of snakes and ladders is placed, so you can print a genuinely new layout whenever you like.

Can two snakes or ladders share the same square?

No. Every square is used by at most one snake or ladder endpoint, so there's never any ambiguity about what happens when a player lands on a given square.

Can I use this to review a subject, not just play the classic game?

Yes. Many teachers require a correct answer to a question before a player can roll or before a ladder counts, turning the same board into a review game for any topic.

Is my configuration saved or uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything is generated locally in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
