About this tip calculator
Splitting a bill fairly is a small piece of arithmetic that gets fiddly fast once tip and multiple people are both in play, which is exactly what this calculator handles in one step: enter the bill, choose a tip percentage, set how many people are splitting it, and it works out the tip, the grand total, and the exact per-person share.
Tipping norms vary enormously depending on where you are and what kind of service you're paying for, so this tool deliberately doesn't push a single "correct" percentage. In the United States and Canada, 15–20% at full-service restaurants is common practice, often nudging toward 20–25% for exceptional service. In much of Europe, East Asia, and Australia, service charges are frequently built into the bill already or tipping is more modest and optional. The five preset percentages here (10, 15, 18, 20, 25) simply cover the range people ask for most; type any custom number if your situation calls for something else, including 0.
The round-up option solves a specific annoyance: an exact split often lands on an awkward number like 13.42 per person. Checking "round up the per-person total" adjusts the amount each person pays up to the next whole number, which quietly increases the effective tip percentage slightly — the calculator shows you both the original and adjusted figures so nothing is hidden. It's a small courtesy that makes paying in cash, or splitting evenly through a payment app, far less fiddly.
This version splits the total evenly across everyone at the table. If your group needs an uneven split — because people ordered very differently priced items — you'll want to work out each person's share of the bill separately before applying the tip percentage to their portion.
Whether you tip on the pre-tax subtotal or the post-tax total is a matter of local custom and personal preference; enter whichever number you intend to tip on, and the calculator applies the percentage to exactly that.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
It depends heavily on your country and the type of service. In the US and Canada, 15–20% is typical for restaurants. Many other countries tip more modestly or have service charges already included. Use the preset that matches your local norm, or enter any custom percentage.
Does this split the bill evenly or by what each person ordered?
Evenly across the number of people you enter. For an uneven split based on individual orders, calculate each person's share of the bill first, then apply the tip percentage to their portion separately.
What does the "round up" option actually change?
It rounds each person's payment up to the next whole number for convenience, which slightly increases the total tip beyond your chosen percentage. The results panel shows the adjusted effective tip percentage so you can see exactly how much extra that added.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Conventions differ by region and personal preference. Enter whichever bill amount you intend to tip on — pre-tax subtotal or post-tax total — and the calculator applies your chosen percentage to that exact figure.
Can the tip percentage be 0?
Yes. Entering 0% simply splits the bill itself evenly across everyone, with no tip added.
